Descripción:
The
organisation was set up in 1934. It was named the British Council
in 1936.
We
are incorporated by royal charter. In the UK we are registered
as a charity (not-for-profit organisation) and operate as an executive
non-departmental public body. A non-departmental public body is
a national public body that operates independently of government,
but for which ministers are ultimately responsible. Many non-departmental
public bodies have a sponsoring government department. In our
case, this department is the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
We
were set up to promote a wider knowledge of the United Kingdom
abroad, to promote the knowledge of the English language, and
to develop closer cultural relations between the United Kingdom
and other countries.
Our purpose is to
build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK
and other countries and to increase appreciation of the UK's creative
ideas and achievements
